I recently had to give into pregnancy and buy my first maternity clothes.
I was a little trepidatious, because the words “Maternity Fashion” usually sound a little oxymoronic to most people, and they don’t tend to bring to mind “style” as we know it. But with my new goal of living purposefully, and keeping the idea of an organized Maternity Capsule Wardrobe in mind, I set out for the stores determined not to buy anything I didn’t really love.
Not sure what a Capsule Wardrobe is in the first place? Well, the gist of the idea is limiting yourself to the number of items in your closet, and making sure those pieces are all “favorites”. Then supplement with a few basics and some fun accessories, and mix and match to your hearts content! In the end, you’ll feel more confident and have more time for the important things in life.

I recently went through and reorganized my regular closet around the Capsule Wardrobe concept. But since I have to start from scratch with all new items for a Maternity Wardrobe, I’ve decided to utilize the idea of a Capsule Wardrobe from the very beginning – it’s the perfect thing to keep in mind when building up a Maternity Wardrobe, because you really don’t need to go crazy buying tons of clothes for just a few months, and a capsule wardrobe is all about keeping things simple. Yet stylish!!
Here is my current Maternity Capsule Wardrobe in progress:
1 Pair Shorts | 1 Pair Cropped Pants | 1 Pair Boot-Cut Jeans | 3 Skirts | 1 Dress | 1 Pair Pajamas | 1 Bathrobe | 1 Silk Shawl (not pictured) | 4 Sweaters | 6 long-sleeved shirts | 2 t-shirts | 5 tank tops | 2 bras
Luckily, despite my uncertainty, we hit ONE store and it was way too easy. I found tons of cute things, and everything I got was exactly my style. There are a few items I can already tell I’m going to be a little sad not to be able to wear anymore when I’m no longer pregnant. And they’re all good quality, classic staple pieces that will last and wear with me throughout multiple pregnancies, which means that hopefully – even though spending money on a wardrobe I’m only going to wear for 5 more months hurts right now – it’ll be an investment that will be well worth it in the future, as well.
So for those of you moms-to-be out there, wondering how in the heck you can still look cute while wearing maternity clothes, be sure to check out my stash and click the links below to find out where you can purchase today’s inspiration pieces!
Live Purposefully – Building A Maternity Capsule Wardrobe
Maternity Monday Inspiration Pieces
I wore this outfit out running errands the other day, and got complimented on it by a really cute and stylish store clerk. She was so surprised when I told her I just had to buy it from the maternity section!
The Reason I Love These Items:
The Tunic – I love this piece because you can dress it up or dress it down, it’s long enough to wear with leggings (if you’re short like me) but still looks super cute with jeans, and it’s got a good level of stretch which means I’m not too worried about “bumping” out of it later in pregnancy when I’m larger. Plus, you can never go wrong with a classic black and white stripe! My MIL told me I looked like Audrey Hepburn – which is the biggest compliment a girl can get, in my book!
The Leggings – Do I really have to explain to you why I, as a pregnant person, love leggings? I mean, heck, I love them even when I’m not pregnant, but now they’re basically the best things ever. These are low-panel leggings with a shirred side, and they are ridiculously comfortable, cute, AND have room to grow. Bam. Sold!
The Ankle Boots – No idea why, but I’m really in love with ankle boots lately. I asked Captain America for another pair for Christmas just the other day. These ones are not only super cute, but they’re actually really comfortable, which is surprising considering the size of the heel and the angle of your foot! Plus they’re turquoise which is my color right now, AND I found them on clearance while shopping for our Honeymoon. Can’t beat that!
Overall I’m really happy with my first maternity shopping experience, but I still need a few more basics to totally complete my Maternity Capsule Wardrobe.
I’m good on tank tops and long sleeved shirts and sweaters, but I may need another pair of jeans at some point, and I’m definitely investing in another pair of those leggings! Right now I can still get away with wearing most of the t-shirts that I already own, especially if I add an extra layer such as a long tank top or belly band underneath – which works at the moment since it’s winter – but I may need to invest in some additional maternity tees once spring hits.
I can’t tell you how much I am loving being comfortable and cute no matter what I pull out of my closet these days – especially when most of those days still start with me hunched over the toilet. UGH – does the morning sickness ever end??
